Estate Auction Adventures

Last week Hugh and I went to our first estate auction together. What an adventure! Unfortunately, we didn't take any pictures there but we have taken some pictures of our purchases which I will try to upload (my first time in here...no promises).

Hugh jumped right in there and had a "number" tag before I even knew what one was. He was a competitive bidder and I think we probably made a few enemies! We caught the evil eye a few times when we made away with some treasures. We made off with an antique student desk with tilting top and inkwell arm, an antique oil lamp, a sewing machine with table (it actually works!), a shelving thingamajig for the bathroom, and a box of books with some amazing finds in it. Oh, and an antique swiveling piano stool (well, keyboard stool in our case!). Oh, and a box. I think that is it. Oh, and two rugs. That's really it this time. Near the end I thought Hugh may have just become so sucked into the adrenalin that he had gone off the manic end and was just bidding on things for the heck of it. I mean, it was a frilly hand held fan for goodness sakes! What could he have wanted with that!!! Turned out he really liked the box and had some creative ideas but boy...for a minute there I was really worried.

The auctioneer was a riot. He sounded like a very southern boy rapping! Fortunately for us his southern dialect slowed the typically quick tempo enough for us to be able to follow him. He gave brief descriptions of the merchandise before beginning the bidding. Some of his introductions included, "this is a fine peice...made of tree wood" or "it's only money folks" or if he started too high and someone undercut his opening bid he would say, "well, it's more than I had". He was just as entertaining as the actual purchases!

I hope ya'll enjoy reading about our adventures...we're enjoying making the memories.

Notes for Am and Hugh: 'Kevin and Michelle' who had bought the estate and needed someone to exercise their horses and who had newborn barn kittens. 'Larry' the ultraconservative and very wise school custodian. And many others whose name I didn't catch. I mention them here more for Hugh and I to be able to reminisce
